Issue No.6 -- Webbing
***************************
HI,
Many
upholstery projects require webbing. It is important to
know what type to use and how to apply it.
In
many cases webbing provides the support for the person who
is sitting on the piece of furniture.
Seats are not the only place where webbing may be used. Any
place where there is an open area on the frame, such as the
inside arm, inside wing or inside back—strips of webbing can
be applied and then covered with burlap to form a base for
the padding that will be applied to these areas. Other
places where webbing can be used are dining room chair seats
and the top of ottoman frames. Also, when coil springs are
used, webbing is used as a base to support the coil springs.
Types
of webbing
Jute
webbing has been used for many years. Jute webbing is a
natural material. It is tightly woven, exceptionally strong
and has very little stretch. Jute webbing can be used in
any of the above applications.
Synthetic jute
is another type of
webbing. It has less stretch than the natural jute
webbing. It is mildew resistant, odorless and can be used
just like the natural jute webbing.
Both
the natural jute and the synthetic jute webbing come 3 ˝”
wide.
Elastic webbing is another type of webbing. It usually
comes in 2” or 3” widths. It is used on seats and backs and
it will have a little stretch when you sit on it or lean
back against it.
Rubber webbing is used mostly on Danish style furniture. It
is 2” wide and will have a little stretch when pressure is
applied to it.
Applying Webbing
When
applying any kind of webbing, you attach it to one side of
the frame. Stretch it to the desired tension. Then, tack
it in place on the other side of the frame.
There are tools made to stretch webbing. Jute and synthetic
jute is stretched by using a tool with sharp projections
that grab the webbing and allow you to stretch it.
There is a special tool made for stretching elastic webbing.
However, we have found that in many applications it can be
stretched by hand.
There is a special tool made for rubber webbing. But, most
of the time we have applied rubber webbing by stretching it
by hand.

This
is a brief introduction to webbing. Installing jute webbing
is covered in detail in our ebook, “How To Upholster
Furniture”, which is available through our website
www.HowToUpholster.com
We
are beginning to put together a series of how-to videos on
different upholstery techniques that are easier to
understand when viewed rather than read about them. Right
now we have two videos available. One is How To
Blindstitch and the other is How To Install Buttons.
They are available at
www.howtoupholster.com/How-To%20Videos.htm
We
would like to know what basic upholstery topics you would
like to see in the Upholstery Tips Newsletter. Send your
suggestions to
editor@HowToUpholster.com and we will do our best to
include them in future issues of the Newsletter or answer
you personally.
