Learning How to Upholster Has Many Benefits

Here are a few of the benefits of learning how to upholster. Once you have mastered some of the basic upholstery principles, you will be amazed how often you will be using this skill. And you can have fun at the same time.

Some of the Major Benefits

Save money. Instead of replacing a piece of furniture, you will be able to reupholster it. By doing this you will save a considerable amount of money.

Repairs.  You will easily be able to do repairs on your upholstered furnishings. Some examples are re-attaching or replacing buttons or  re-stitching ripped seams.

Restore Cushions.  Through use  over a long period of time, some cushions may become less comfortable and lose their original shape. As you become more familiar with upholstery techniques, you should easily be able to restore any cushion to a comfortable condition.

Restore a Room’s Harmony. The harmony of a room can be disturbed just by changing an element such as paint or wallpaper. When this happens, other elements of the room may need to be changed to bring back its harmony. If this is the case and you feel that the covers of the upholstered pieces should be changed, you should be able to do the necessary reupholstery.

Customizing Your Upholstered Furniture.  Although we have mentioned a few of the benefits of learning how to upholster, a major benefit is the satisfaction you will feel upon completion of each of your upholstered piece. Actually each piece will have been customized by you.

Learn Basics of Upholstery Faster

As you complete each, you will have gained knowledge and experience in the basics of upholstering. On each future project you will build on this knowledge and experience.

Avoid Frustration

Best to avoid frustration in the beginning as you are learning how to upholster. You do this by not starting out with recliners, sofas, hide-a-beds, large chairs, or chaises. Besides, they will be easier to do once you have acquired knowledge and experience.

New Skill Uses

Think of the many things you will be able to do with your newly acquired skill. Some things that come to mind are: customize a headboard, surprise someone by reupholstering their favorite chair, redo the cushions on your outdoor chairs or chaise.

Your newly learned skill will keep you as busy as you want to be, maybe even busier than you want to be.

I think it's a great idea to reupholster a chair to better fit a room instead of replacing it. Odds are, when you've taken the fabric off you can replace the padding to increase the comfort of the chair as well. It would be good to learn how to reupholster, or find a reputable business nearby that can do it for you.

It was great that you said that one of the major benefits of learning how to upholster furniture is that we can avoid replacing old furniture pieces and thus, allow us to save a considerable amount of money. My brother will be thrilled to hear about that because he wants to save money on the redecoration of the house for the year-end party. However, I honestly feel like doing the reupholstery ourselves is more than unlikely. We'll be better off hiring a professional. Thanks!

I like how you point out that you can save lot of money by reupholstering a piece of furniture instead of replacing it. My wife has a chair she loves, but it's pretty beat up. I wouldn't mind learning how to reupholster it not only to save money, but to preserve the chair due to its sentimental value.

Earnest, sometimes we do not want to replace a piece for several reasons, as you have stated. If you learn to reupholster your furniture, you will be surprised how many times you will use this skill. Thanks for your comment.
